If there’s one thing I’ve seen in my years of renovating homes and building
custom closets, it’s that the actual process of decluttering a closet is never as bad as it seems from the outset. In fact, if given some concerted effort, it’s easily possible to give your entire closet a makeover in a single weekend.
Once you’re ready to get started on giving your custom closet a complete weekend makeover, you should:
Now that I’ve given you the basic concepts to work with, it’s time to dive into the details together.
When you’re looking to do a complete makeover of your custom closet, let alone in a single weekend, there’s nothing I’ve seen that’s more difficult than trying to just optimize what’s already there. If you go with this method, you’ll struggle to adjust anything at all, as you’ll be stuck in older ways of thinking.
But if you clear everything out and start with a clean slate, it’ll be much easier for you to visualize what you want from the space - and how you’ll be able to achieve it.
One of the quickest and easiest ways to get your custom closet in order is to set up designated areas for all of your items and then stick to that structure. This is one of the first tips I give to all of my clients, because I’ve seen just how much of a difference it can make for them.
You can go even further and invest in a label maker, or maybe you’ll opt for color-coordinating based on where everything goes. Whatever works best for you is what you should decide on.
If there’s any area of custom closets that I’ve seen go to waste the most, it’s the wall space. Too often, homeowners will have shelves and drawers that are filled to bursting, with plenty of empty, untapped wall space at their disposal.
You can easily (and cheaply) remedy this by installing either a system of hooks or shelving units. Whether you’d rather hang up your items or display them on a nice shelf, this will help give you the space you need.
As the pros at Better Homes & Gardens point out, there’s no reason to blow your whole budget on expensive organizational systems and solutions if the simpler, cheaper ones will do the trick just fine. Less is more, after all.
By far one of the best ways I’ve seen to get the most bang for your buck in any closet is to install a door organizer. Simply hang this over the back of your closet door, and in a single step, you’ll have entire shelves’ worth of extra space at your disposal. It doesn’t get easier than that.
Just because a complete closet makeover can seem daunting doesn’t mean it has to be. If you follow my simple tips (and get a bit creative to make them your own), you should have no problem at all getting your custom closet in order - even in a single weekend.
